Hair Care Advice
Try not to be cheap about the products you use on your hair. Cheap ones will either dry out your hair or grease it up, find good quality products that are best for your hair type.
Dry hair is caused by heat and the elements. The tip of the hair is most at risk, as they are not in direct contact with the scalp and can't utilize the sebum oil it produces.
Don't wash your hair every day, unless you have an oily scalp. Shampooing 2 or 3 times a week should be enough to remove dirt and build-up.
Greasy hair is caused by a build-up of secretion from sebaceous glands producing oil in the scalp. Perspiration, environmental dirt and bacteria can add to the problem making the hair unmanageable and looking unpleasant.
Greasiness on short hair can be particularly unpleasant, very short hair has a smaller area on which the grease can spread.
Shampoos
As we look after our skin, our hair needs the same attention.
Keeping it clean is the priority and washing it every day is a must unless you have an overly dry scalp a wash every other day will suffice. It’s not advisable to wash your hair more than once a day, to do so you are stripping away essential oils that give your hair its natural shine and thickness.
Anti-dandruff shampoos create an unpleasant texture to your hair, so only use when you have case of dandruff, and once under control go back to your usual shampoo, otherwise alternate your shampoos between brands, as this prevents build up on your hair.
Conditioners
The right conditioner is as equally important as the shampoo you choose. A good conditioner will provide your hair with shine, texture and thickness. The scalp doesn’t need a lot of conditioner, so concentrate on the strands making sure all the hair up to the ends are lathered. Leave in conditioners are great for dry hair or if you use a hairdryer regularly.
To finish off, towel dry your hair and leave it slightly damp to dry naturally, or if using the hairdryer blow dry using a slow fan setting, with a warm to hot temperature. Leaving the hair a little damp can avoid damage.
Styling
Choosing the right styling product can seem daunting and confusing. Using a particular product depends on what type of hair you have, what effect you want to achieve, and how long you want it to last.
Gels are ideal for fine or thinning hair, and it can give your hair body and increase the appearance of volume. When using with thin hair use sparingly and avoid gluey type gels that will not look pleasant.
Waxes are oil based products and are ideal for short hair and will provide texture and shine. Used sparingly a good quality wax will provide long lasting hold, but remember to have on hand a shampoo that will completely remove the product when washing, otherwise it will become difficult to style and manage.
Using a good quality mud, dough or clay are suitable for all hair types and will provide the hair with natural volume and shine, giving the user long lasting hold without the worry of it going flaky or hard. Depending on which you choose, they all give varying effects and finishes, so consider what style you want.
Tools
Hair tools are regularly used but rarely considered. The wrong tool can inflict more damage on your hair than you would think. Whether it’s a comb, hairdryer or straighteners they need to be effective and fit in with your environment. A quality comb ideally should be tortoise shell to prevent breaking or splitting the cuticles. It also makes sense that the hairdryer cord is long enough for you to comfortably dry and style your hair.
Hair colouring
As we get older, the pigment cells in our hair follicles gradually die. When there are fewer pigment cells in a hair follicle, that strand of hair will no longer contain as much melanin and will become a more transparent color like grey, silver, or white as it grows.
As we continue to get older, fewer pigment cells will be around to produce melanin. Eventually, the hair will look completely grey.
Men can get grey hair at any age. Some go gray at a young age - as early as when they are at school - whereas others may be in their 30s or 40s before they see that first grey hair. How early we get gray hair is determined by our genes.
Not only can colouring your hair hide those unwanted grey strands, it can also give your hair a boost and some extra depth. The products we have made available today are less harmful to your hair and have a natural appearance blending in with your normal colour, or providing a completely new look.
Hair loss
Hair loss can affect some men from the age of 15 onwards. The process affects everyone differently. Where some men go completely bald at 25, others thin so slowly that it's barely noticeable. By the age of 60, the majority of men will have experienced some form of hair loss.
Technically, it's known as Male Pattern Baldness (or adrogenic alopecia), and is closely associated with the male hormone, testosterone.
Typically, hair recedes from the temples, or the crown, or simply thins out all over.
Patchy hair loss is known as alopecia areata, which can occur due to shock or stress, as can 100% baldness, known as alopecia totalis.
We believe the products we offer provide the solution you are seeking, along with the knowledge that they are fully recommended and endorsed by the Alopecia Society
